still portrait: costume research for the big black dark 2007

CHRISTINE CALFAS has acted in regional theater for over twenty years.    She was a founding member of Tygre's Heart Shakespeare Co. in Portland, and acting company member at Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox, Massachussets. A Fulbright scholar in Odissi Indian classical dance, Christine was a disciple of dance master Guru Surendra Nath Jena of New Delhi for 19 years until his death in 2007. Christine met Richard Armstrong, core member of the Roy Hart theater, in New York in 1998. Ongoing collaborative training with Richard at the Banff Centre for the Arts has greatly influenced her work. Since 2000, she has produced a growing body of pieces for solo actor, pairing herself onstage with (among other things) bricks, saws, knives, puppets, and paper birds.

In addition to being an artist, Christine is also an anatomist.   Bodies in all sorts of psychic, emotional and physical states interest her.
